Overview: Leonard Shelby jagt den Vergewaltiger und Mörder seiner Frau. Eine quälende Detektivarbeit. Denn Shelby verliert den Verstand. Buchstäblich. Alle 15 Minuten wird sein Kurzzeitgedächtnis komplett gelöscht und wieder auf Null gestellt.
Um nicht jedes Mal wieder von Vorne beginnen zu müssen, hat der gepeinigte Mann alle bisherigen Beweise und Indizien in Form von Tätowierungen und Polaroidfotos festgehalten. Nie kann Shelby sicher sein, ob die Personen, die er trifft, ein ehrliches Spiel mit ihm spielen. Nie weiß er, ob er seine Tattoos oder Bilder auch tatsächlich richtig deutet. Und doch kann Leonard nicht aufhören mit seiner Suche – auch wenn es bedeutet, dass er dabei Geheimnisse über sich selbst aufdecken könnte, die ihn in seinen Grundfesten erschüttern werden.
