Im Mittelpunkt steht Militärpolizist Captain Willard, der den Auftrag erhält, den hochrangigen US-Militär Colonel Kurtz zu liquidieren, der sich an der kambodschianischen Grenze mit einer folgsamen Einheit im Dschungel verschanzt hat. Nach der mehrfach asgezeichneten Kinofassung von 1979 beschäftigte sich Coppola im Jahr 2001 noch einmal mit dem Film, fügte insgesamt 49 Minuten bisher ungesehener Szenen hinzu und schuf mit Apocalypse Now Redux die definitive Version seines Meisterwerks.
